Tips for Finding Work in a Recession

Hint: Work with a Recruiter!

Finding a job in a recession can be a challenge. Whether you are a recent graduate or you are looking at changing jobs, the simple fact is that locating employment during a recession can be difficult. The number of jobs posted tends to decline and the jobs that are posted frequently have a lower salary range than you may be interested in. This is why it is critically important to make sure that you have all of your bases covered when looking for a job in a recession. Working with a recruiter is one of those bases that should not be overlooked.

As you are probably already aware, finding a job is often about who you know and being in the right place at the right time. While networking can help a great deal, networking cannot always open all of the right doors for you. Professional recruiters have extensive networks with a diverse range of businesses and industries that can truly open doors you might not have ever even thought of. Working with a recruiter certainly does not take the place of the entirety of your job search, but while you continue with traditional methods of looking for a position, your recruiter can unearth job leads as well as vacancies that have not even been advertised or announced yet. This provides you with a critical advantage over all of the other job seekers out there who are relying solely on publicly announced jobs.

Beyond providing you with deeply critical job leads, recruiters can also serve as important employment advisors as well. This can be quite important if you have been pounding the streets for awhile looking for a job and are not getting any calls for interviews or you are receiving interviews but no job offers. Recruiters have the experience and knowledge necessary to help you refine your resume skills as well as guide you in learning how to answer challenging interview questions. A skilled recruiter can also assist you in learning how to negotiate the best compensation package possible.

When choosing a recruiter to work with while trying to find a job during a recession, it is important to make sure you select an expert. Not all recruiters are the same. Look for someone who has the skills and experience necessary to guide you through the process from start to finish. Of course, network connections are also important as well.

To achieve the best results from your recruiter, do be sure that you are completely honest with him or her regarding your experience, education, qualifications and future career goals. In order to provide you with the best service possible, your recruiter will need to have as much accurate information as possible.

Remember to stay in touch with your recruiter. When he or she sends you out on a meeting or an interview, be sure to follow-up to let him or her know how it went. Your recruiter cannot help you if you do not provide honest feedback. Forthright communication can help to uncover problem areas that could be preventing you from gaining the position you are looking for.

Finally, make sure that you exercise patience. Even with a skilled recruiter, it can sometimes take some time to match the right person with just the right position. Keep in mind, however, that utilizing the services of an experienced recruiter will increase your chances of locating a job.
