Web Developer

A web developer is a software developer or software engineer specifically engaged in the development of World Wide Web applications, or distributed network applications that are run over the HTTP protocol from a web server to a web browser. Individuals in this position may specialize in a specific tier of the application or may take a more interdisciplinary role. Depending on the size of the organization, web developers may work closely with a web designer, web producer, project manager, software architect, or database administrator - or they may be responsible for tasks such as web design, project management, and database administration themselves.

Day-to-day responsibilities include site creation and design encompassing experience in some or all of following: graphic design, XHTML, CSS, usability and semantics, programming (.Net, ASP, ColdFusion, Ruby on Rails, AJAX/JavaScript), server administration, content management, marketing, testing and deployment.

There are no formal educational or licensure requirements to become a web developer. However, many colleges and trade schools offer coursework in web development. In addition, many tutorials and articles which teach web development are available on the web.
