As an important new addition to the software development team supporting the back-end content systems
• Work in a collaborative, open, laid back environment
• Be responsible for facilitating all aspects involved in the collection (i.e. web scraping), conversion (e.g. to XML or RDBMS) and delivery of Primary Law content to product platforms
• Be responsible for specifying and/or coding conversions from source format to XML and/or database
• Come to recognize opportunities for process & code improvement as you “learn the ropes”
What you will be doing as a contractor
• Creating and maintaining Extract Transform Load (ETL) workflows for metadata extraction and related data mining
• Designing & coding web crawlers for Primary Law and other web-hosted data sources using both traditional and modern web client technologies
• Normalizing legislative, regulatory and other unstructured documents/ metadata from a wide variety of source formats to XML, RDBMs and/or other normalized formats
• Deploying code mostly to Linux, Solaris and other Unix-style environments
Required Skills
• 3-5 years’ software development experience
• Strong verbal, written and some visual (e.g. diagramming, flowcharting) communication skills
• Experience developing in Linux or Unix environments
• Experience with multiple scripting languages, preferably Python, Bash and Node.js
• A firm grasp on using Regular Expressions or XPATH to accomplish data mining exercises; preferably exposure to both
• A solid understanding of object oriented programming (OOP) principles
• Intermediate-to-advanced understanding of SQL and relational databases
• Exposure to XML parsing (SAX, DOM, XSLT, etc.) and generation/serialization
