This year for International Youth Day we have put the spotlight on some of our young guns here at Modis soon to be Akkodis and are highlighting their amazing achievements and successes and why they chose to have a career in tech.
Let us introduce.... Abel James. Abel is currently a Support Developer and is part of the team who developed Yarning, the app that was recently awarded the Social Impact Inclusion Changemaker 2022 Microsoft Partner of the Year Award. Here is his story.
I went to Murdoch University where I did Computer Science and Mobile and Web App Development. I graduated at the end of 2021. I had chosen that field because I realised the way of the future is through technology. This field was my best chance of being a part of that future that can make a difference.
I've always been interested in Physics and Mathematics so I always assumed that I would be doing something related to Engineering but as I finished my schooling, I started thinking about my future prospects and career growth which is what prompted me to choose the tech field.
My parents and brother have always been so supportive of my happiness and growth which took the pressure off and gave me more of a freedom to choose my own path after school.
My life mantra would be "It is all in your head" and it is what I live by. There is no bad situation. Every situation is an opportunity as long as you can change your perspective towards it. My life has been happier and more peaceful since adopting this mantra.
I would ideally like to be working in a management style role where I get to inspire and lead teams of creative people that brings out the best in them and others.
I have been working towards getting a few Microsoft and Azure certifications which would help me do my job more efficiently. This also adds my value in the job role which would contribute to my growth in Modis.
I heard about Modis from a friend of mine who worked in the business. The main reason I applied was the exposure in the way Modis works. The consulting area makes it a great avenue to work with different technologies and different practices within the same company which was very attractive.
In 5 years, I see myself as an Account Director which is what I'm working towards at this stage. This would align with what my ideal job role would be.
Advice that I would give my younger self would be to never quit and to dream big. You'll only reach the moon if you aim for the stars and you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, so don't be afraid to try every opportunity that comes your way.
Being in tech is such a satisfying role as you create new things and can express your creativity. However, being in tech is a constant learning journey and if you're open to learning new things, it is one of the most satisfying places to be.
It's a little cliche but I look forward to who I will be in the next 10 years as my role model. I dream about who I would want to be and that is the person I look up to.
I think as an industry, we tend to be a little less communicative with each other. It would be very attractive to younger generations if we could portray the tech field as a more creative industry. This could also potentially attract a more diverse community of people in and around the tech industry.
In my opinion, tech is not promoted enough in schools. The benefits and capabilities of the industry are not being made known to the average student that is in school. Potentially, implementing some sort of tech related subjects at school could spike the interest of most student to try it and be involved in the space
I was working on the Yarning project while I was in my final year of uni. This was especially difficult since I was working full time and it was one of the most crucial years of my degree. It was a blessing to be put on the team for this project even while I was completing my studies. The learning aspect never stops and that is one of the things I cherish about this experience. It made me think outside of the box in university with the industry experience I was receiving simultaneously
It was very satisfying in two different aspects; Firstly, being able to use my creativity and knowledge to start something from scratch and for it to be a finished product was an accomplishment. Secondly, knowing that something that I have been a part of can bring a change to the community especially in the language and cultural barrier is a fantastic feeling.
I could not believe that I had a part in something so huge. I always hear news about people getting awarded these things and never did I imagine that I would be that someone. It was truly a testament to how you could be at the right place at the right time and doing your best would result in great things.
There were times where I learnt what the prospects of my jobs could be. I had a moment where I could take the lead and speak directly with the officers at WAPOL. It really had an impact in the way that I view my role in the future as a consultant. I did have some trouble with learning the new technology, but everyone was nice to help if you ask.
