E-Mobility

The rise of the electric vehicle (EV) is revolutionizing the automotive sector and its related industries.

The magnitude of its impact is only just becoming apparent.

A mix of regulatory pressure, public demand, and an increase in new market entrants disrupting the industry means that change is accelerating even faster than expected.
So what are e-mobility trends that are turning the automotive industry on its head?

1. Autonomous Vehicles

Bringing autonomous vehicles to market is now the number one driver of industry transformation. This shows the extent to which the industry has moved from vehicle manufacturer to software designer.

Rapid technological advances over the past decade have largely driven this transformation. Strategic planning and research and development (R&D) are focused on this area more than any other. And it’s not just the industry acting on its own assumptions. There’s already strong and growing public demand for autonomous vehicles.

Although there are still many safety and regulatory concerns surrounding fully autonomous cars on the road, partially autonomous vehicles are already on the market. Car buyers eagerly anticipate incremental developments with each new model release.

2. Software

Adopting new software quickly can make or break success. Automotive businesses know that success in adapting to e-mobility trends will mainly depend on greater adoption of new digital technologies and development of the skills to deliver them: they know hardware will take a back seat to software and services. And it’s been predicted that as hardware becomes more generic, automotive producers will differentiate themselves through their ability to provide more sophisticated software functionality.

3. Improving sources of energy

New energy storage solutions are one of the most important trends in automotive research, development and investment or EV take up to be a viable alternative to combustion engine vehicles and to match consumer demand, battery production needs to increase at a rapid rate.

The future of Europe’s carmakers may depend upon reliable supplies of cheap lithium-ion cells.
To this end, at least seven large new battery pack production plants are planned for Europe.
Infrastructure development is another key growth area. Electric vehicle charging points have also shown substantial growth over the past decade. In the U.S alone, the number of charging outlets has grown with upwards of 47,000 now scattered across the country, including 6,270 fast-charging outlets
