My name is Jackson Meyer, and I was selected by Modis as their CEO for One Month candidate to represent them in the Adecco Group North America boot camp. When I got the call, it felt like winning the lottery! Three weeks later I was on a plane flying across the country to join the Modis presidents, Trent Beekman and Ger Doyle, in Jacksonville, Florida. After spending some time with them, I joined seven other well-qualified candidates that are also in the running for the one internship role.
Coming into this adventure, I had no experience in the staffing industry and knew very little about it. While I have been here, I have seen the effects of a recent segmentation of the Modis business and seen the core competency of each branch in action.
An over-arching theme in the staffing space is that staffing has become commoditized, and Modis, as well as all other Adecco Group business units, are differentiating themselves from their competitors. There are two ways to do this: pursue a low-cost strategy or pursue a value-add (differentiating) strategy. Due to shrinking margins in the space, low-cost strategy wasn’t an option.
Modis is focused on providing service with a relationship. They are motivated by long-term relationships with clients to place the right person in the job, not the quickest placement. This company culture really stuck with me – putting people first rather than short-lived profits.
My perception of Modis and other staffing agencies has been completely changed by this experience. Being in the technology space and being contacted by recruiters has always been a neutral experience, but I viewed it as negative.
I went to school with a cohort of 100 software developers and we would often gripe and complain about “head hunters.” I didn’t realize that these recruiters were trying to find and place me in a job with a good company. A lot of these jobs that are being filled are client jobs that are not available to the public on job boards. They are finding people great paying jobs at great companies that they couldn’t find themselves!
Being valuable to the company you work for is something that’s important to me. Whether the company is a 3-person startup or a Fortune Global 500 team like Adecco Group, every person must bring value to the table. Every person I met – salesperson, recruiter, director, president – all knew their role and, while they were very good at them, they wouldn’t think twice about collaborating across departments, helping others, or taking on new roles. They would provide value beyond what was expected of them, a mindset every future CEO for One Month candidate needs to be successful.
