Field Area Network team – if a utility service goes down (i.e. a tree knocks down a power line), this team is alerted through Itron and responsible for identifying problem at system level and ensuring it’s resolved in as little down-time as possible. Mission critical team as they are heavily regulated on repair time.
This role will be mix of hands-on network engineering (routing/switching, firewalling, troubleshooting L2/L3) and collaborating/building relationships with resources in the field who will be doing the physical utility repair.
Work experience takes precedent over certifications/education
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION
Performs activities to support operations and maintenance of IT solutions related to wireless Smart Grid Field Area Network (FAN) communications.
Under the general direction of more experienced personnel, provides technical support of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Distribution Automation (DA), and Land Mobile Radio (LMR) networks deployed throughout the Utility companies in accordance with established strategy, architecture, security, and process requirements.
Expands and applies knowledge of customer and IT processes to job activities. Works under direct supervision to promote standardization across utilities, improve network performance and capacity, optimize operational cost, and increase customer satisfaction.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Under general direction from a Manager or Lead Analyst, perform and document work activities related to analysis and support of the wireless Field Area Network technologies deployed for AMI, DA, and LMR throughout Utilities.
Build business and IT knowledge from experienced personnel and apply in daily work activity.
Develop strong working relationships with IT, Utility, and external business partners to promote a results oriented, collaborative team environment.
Actively support process improvement activities to increase standardization across utilities and improve operational effectiveness. Utilize best practices to improve Utility Communications products and services.
Mentor and coach less experienced team members.
Promote the values of Diversity and Inclusion, and contribute to IT innovation initiatives.
Ensure adherence to standards as outlined in the company Management Model. Complete all required training on time to maintain compliance with company and regulatory policies.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline and 3 to 5 years’ experience in IT infrastructure related technologies
Strong written and verbal business communication skills and time management skills; comfortable working in a highly collaborative, team oriented environment
3+ years’ experience in a wireless communications support role
Intermediate understanding of IP networking
Technical certification in one or more network technologies (CompTIA A+ / Network+, Cisco CCNA, etc.)
Wireless mesh experience
Experience working in a regulated utility environment
