Summary:

The Electrical Engineering Technician works closely with the engineering team to lead efforts to modify, measure, test, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electronics equipment and systems for the electrical products developed by both Vapor Bus International (VBI) and Ricon Corporation. This includes advanced electronic controllers and electrically controlled systems supplied to the bus industry including door operators, ramps, lifts, and sensing systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interpret electrical & electronic schematics and harness drawings to analyze, measure, troubleshoot, or rework a variety of electrical and electronic systems.
  • Apply a methodical approach to the root cause investigation of electronic parts, sub-assemblies, and electronic systems.
  • Identify issues with electrical designs and work with engineering team to resolve deficiencies.
  • Troubleshoot returned electronic controllers and electrical systems from end customers and determine final disposition to scrap, re-work, or reuse.
  • Troubleshoot electronic PCB assemblies down to the individual component / semi-conductor / trace level when required, using typical or advanced tooling as well as techniques like signal probing, node analysis, etc.
  • Perform PCB board level rework when required, using typical tools for PCB assembly repair.
  • Perform harness level rework when required, e.g., crimping wires, modifying wire lengths, replacing connectors or wire terminals.
  • Setup and operate test equipment and test fixtures used for prototype/type testing and/or production testing when required.
  • Perform engineering tests according to a pre-defined test plan and capture findings in a test report when required.
  • Prepares electro-mechanical system test procedures for routine or in process production testing.
  • Collaborate with electrical and software engineers to develop re-work instructions, test plans, electrical designs and drawings.
  • Perform tasks based on drawings, diagrams, schematics, written and verbal instruction.
  • Identify test equipment, piece parts or consumables necessary for troubleshooting, repair, and rework duties.
  • Work independently and as a part of a larger team.
  • Communicate findings to engineering, production, or the quality team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, Electronics, or other relevant engineering field from an accredited institution.
  • 4+ years of experience in troubleshooting, repairing, and setting up of electronic controllers and electrical control systems in automotive or other transportation applications.
  • 2+ years of experience in troubleshooting, adjusting/repairing wire harnesses for automobile or other transportation applications.
  • Relevant IPC and/or solder training certification is preferred.
  • Experience with with IPC standards regarding the acceptability of printed circuit boards IPC-A-600 for CLASS 2 systems.
  • Experience with IPC standards regarding requirements and acceptance for cable and wire harness assemblies IPC-A-620.
  • Experience with automotive applications of electrical and electronics assemblies including typical considerations for an automotive environment including electrical and non-electrical environmental factors (typical power/voltage levels, sources of interference and guidelines for preventing issues.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform diagnosis and repair of defective electronic components, including soldering.
  • Ability to work with electrical tools for the troubleshooting and repair of defective harnesses and other electrical assemblies: voltmeter, wire crimpers, wire cutters, etc.
  • Ability to use contemporary electrical tools for the testing of complex electronic equipment including but not limited to the following: Logic analyzer, oscilloscope, current meter, thermal imaging cameras, microscope.
  • Proficient in reading and understanding electrical schematics/wiring diagrams/ for PCB level boards and electrical harnesses.
  • Able to perform harness level rework, including cutting and stripping wires, crimping of terminals.
  • Awareness of typical PCB problems due to solder joint issues, damage due to EMI or excessive currents, copper to edge clearance issues, trace spacing, acid traps, etc.
  • Awareness of typical electrical harness problems due to wire bend radius, ineffective shielding, bending/flexing, as well as exposure to shorts or over-current issues.
  • Detail oriented, driven, and able to clearly communicate findings verbally and in written form.
  • Knowledge of electronics handling precautions to prevent ESD and other forms of potential secondary damage
