A SYSTEMS PROJECT ENGINEER 5 position in Everett WA is available courtesy of Modis Engineering. Responsible for providing technical leadership in designing, developing, modifying, qualifying and evaluating electronic instruments, radiation measurement signal chains, air/water sampling subsystems, or other mechanical, electrical, electronic and firmware elements of products and systems.

Systems Project Engineer 5 job RESPONSIBILITIES include:

  1. Develop customized radiation detector and measurement signal chains for instrumentation and control applications at nuclear power plants and other facilities generating or handling radioactivity.
  2. Lead structured product development process with effective project management of complex projects with multiple stakeholders and objectives.
  3. Coordinate and communicate all project technical issues with client, with occasional visits to customer facilities for business development, design reviews, and commissioning.
  4. Coordinate with multifunctional internal/external teams regarding hardware, software, mechanical, test, manufacturing, procurement, sales, service and quality issues.
  5. Specify and describe suitability of system design approach using existing qualified instruments, development of new or modified hardware and software, and integration of third party equipment (electronics, electrical controls, fluid controls, communication and mechanical structures) in order to meet customer application requirements. Application requirements include radiation measurement performance, qualification tests/analyses, quality assurance inspection/measurements and deliverable documentation.  Prepare technical proposals and document compliance to customers’ requirements specifications.
  6. Analyze simulation of measurement range, response time and measurement accuracy.
  7. Prepare piping and instrumentation drawings (P&ID), I&C loop diagrams, assembly drawings, BOMs, modified electronic schematics, procurement/fabrication drawings and specifications.
  8. Prepare functional and calibration test procedures for instrument, signal chain loop, factory/site acceptance.
  9. Prepare qualification test plans and reports for EMC, environmental test seismic and primary calibration.
  10. Prepare customer installation instructions/drawings and operating manual.
  11. Supervise project’s development, reviews, production, test and qualification.


  • BS degree in engineering (typically mechanical, chemical, electrical power and controls)
  • 10 years of design engineering and some project leadership experience

  • Ability to implement product development/sustaining, design control and commercial grade dedication in accordance with nuclear power plant quality assurance (e.g. 10CFR50 Appendix B, ASME NQA-1).
  • Ability to lead the functional, EMC, environmental, seismic and post-accident qualification of safety related equipment in accordance with IEEE Std 323 and IEEE Std 344.
  • Familiarity with Commercial Grade Dedication process (EPRI NP-5652), with the ability to perform technical evaluations of mechanical, electrical and electronic components.
  • Confidence to make design decisions, to select air/liquid process equipment, instrumentation/controls and wiring components and to specify design of supporting mechanical structures, electronics enclosures.
  • Lead teams effectively with good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, self-directed focus on priorities.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or ProEngineer (or other solids CAD).
  • Flexibility to work overtime occasionally and travel by air to Europe or Asia.
  • Position requires sitting, and use of computer screen, keyboard and mouse at least 8 hours per day. Also requires periodic climbing of steps or ladder and crouching to observe or inspect
  • SKILLS DESIRED (If not, must be willing to learn these skills with OJT) :

  • Knowledge of gamma and beta radiation and related measurement techniques and shielding design.
  • Understanding best design practices and qualification testing for Electromagnetic Compatibility.
  • Experience with Monte Carlo (MCNP) modeling of nuclear interactions.
  • Modeling analysis methods for seismic qualification.
