Provide technical hardware and software service in the form of installation, configuration, testing, and maintenance of the College data networks and unified communications systems. Provide technical support for the networks and systems, and coordinate problem resolution efforts with others in Information Technology. Coordinate efforts with Facilities department, vendors, contractors, and services providers. Maintain appropriate support records.


This position reports to the Associate Director for Network and Unified Communications. This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.


Duties may include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned.



  1. Provide technical hardware and software service in the form of installation, configuration, testing, maintenance, and upgrades of the College wired and wireless data network equipment, and unified communications software.
  1. Develop and maintain a general understanding of College data networks, network monitoring and management software, and unified communications systems and services, and related hardware and testing equipment.
  1. Maintain an in-depth knowledge of network hardware, equipment, and configurations used in the edge and distribution layers of the College wired and wireless local area networks (LAN)
  1. Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of telephony and unified communications equipment, services, and solutions in use at the College.
  1. Install, connect, and test data network connectivity for endpoint systems.
  1. Provide data network support and coordination of resolution efforts with others in Digital Instruction and Information Systems by investigating, troubleshooting, and responding in a timely fashion, including the use of network test equipment for problem diagnosis.
  1. Maintain and establish efficient departmental processes and procedures with data communications vendors; act as liaison with vendors to ensure prompt equipment order, delivery, and repair.
  1. Carry out on-site maintenance plans.
  1. Assist in evaluating data network and unified communications equipment, services, and solutions; recommend improvements where warranted.
  1. Assist in updating campus data network, telephony, and unified communications documentation and inventories.
  1. Rotate on-call with another Network and Communications Technician.
  1. Lift and move data network, telephony, and unified communications equipment as needed.



Associate's degree or equivalent technical certifications and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in data networks, network hardware and software installation, diagnosis and repair; excellent attention to detail; analytical organizational, written and verbal communications skills; in-depth knowledge of various network hardware and software supported by Information Technology. An interest in network engineering and to work collaboratively with team. A valid New York State Driver's License or the ability to obtain one and the ability to lift and carry up to 60 lbs. are required.


Most of the work of the incumbent is carried out within a generally accessible, safe, indoor environment. The incumbent will be required to operate various computers and testing equipment. The incumbent must possess or be able to obtain a valid New York State driver's license. The incumbent will need to transport various computer, network, voice communications equipment and have the ability to lift, pull, push, and carry equipment weighing up to 60 pounds. The incumbent will be required to setup and install various hardware and software requiring the ability to bend or kneel, and may be exposed to dirt, dust or other elements.
