Modis is seeking a Trade Compliance Specialist for a 12 month contract opportunity in Plymouth, MN. This position requires medical device experience. The Trade Compliance Specialist will provide trade compliance support to the company’s business within the assigned region and ensure compliance with the import and export laws and regulations of all countries, as well as with the US export control regulations.


  • Support the core trade compliance operating process for the region including import and export compliance procedures.
  • Identify trade compliance risks through internal audit and risk assessment findings and develop risk management strategy.
  • Identify, develop and maintain the company’s Supply Chain Security Programs, maximizing the opportunity of Mutual Recognition Agreements.
  • Look for cost savings through Special Customs Procedures and implement processes and control measures to ensure compliance with active programs
  • Provide a procedure for determining eligibility of products against Free Trade Agreements and associated Country of Origin certification.
  • Implement procedures to manage HS Classifications and Country of Origin on current and new products and develop HS classification, Intrastat, and Country of Origin database.
  • Develop procedures to determine customs valuation, including additions and associated reporting requirements.
  • Provide a process, including monitoring to ensure correct management of Bonds/Guarantees.
  • Establish procedures to properly meet Denied Party/Specially Designated Nationals screening requirements for all company transactions and take appropriate action when issues are identified.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for third party providers, including Customs brokers, and implement KPIs to ensure third parties comply with company’s policies and procedures
  • Review and monitor licenses to ensure compliance with license conditions.
  • Establish and implement recordkeeping policies and procedures for all import and export transactions.
  • Generate trade compliance metrics for reporting within the department and to management.
  • Act as a primary liaison and develop positive relationships between the company and the appropriate government agencies and officials to support the trade compliance program, and respond to all trade related requests.
  • Coordinate and conduct import and export compliance training, including emerging compliance issues.
  • Drive the overall trade compliance strategy and activities for the region.
  • Develop and maintain an effective compliance communication program, promoting awareness of the Trade Compliance Function and policies.
  • Keep informed of pending changes to regulations, trends and best practices and assess potential impact on business whilst providing practical solutions.
  • Address emerging compliance issues with Management and implement sufficient control measures.
  • Identify compliance issues that require follow-up or investigation and consult with Legal as needed to resolve complex Legal Compliance issues.
  • Report violations of compliance to Enforcement Agencies as appropriate and or required.
  • Liaise with Legal, Supply Chain, Sales, Procurement, Finance, Regulatory, Quality, Product Development, Human Resources, Business Information Services, and other departments on trade compliance matters.
  • Specialist and in-region Trade Compliance Officers.
  • This position is required to assure compliance of Company operations to all applicable laws, regulations and standards, good business practices and company documented procedures (including knowledge of all standards, government occupational health and environmental regulations and statutes related to the site).
  • Engage others, promote, and participate in Environmental, Health, and Safety initiatives, focusing on continuous improvement.
  • Qualifications:

  • University Degree (BA degree) preferred.
  • Associate’s Degree in International Trade, Supply Chain, Business or related discipline, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • 1-5 years of experience in Trade Compliance within the international business environment. • Certification in Customs related procedures or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in practical interpretation of trade regulations.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational, priority management, and planning skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, and Oracle.
  • Education requirements can be obtained through an educational institution or gained through equivalent work experience.
